I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Folks who have had a difficult time coming up with a Christmas gift idea for a friend or relative who has left the area may want to give serious consideration to a subscription to their community newspapers. Of course, I may be biased in making this suggestion because I once served as a community correspondent for local newspapers for several years, leading me to a major in journalism. (more…)

After visually reassuring the populace for 67 years that there was a plan to deal with an enemy attack, the official Civil Defense logo was laid to rest on November 30. I didn’t wear a black armband but I did feel a surge of nostalgia as I recalled my 18-month career as a Civil Defense planner. (more…)

We hate to even mention it but winter is here. You wouldn’t know it by looking out the window but step outside and you’ll feel the chill. The forecast is calling for snow this weekend. We’re taking a wait-and-see attitude on this — given the false alarm earlier this week. (more…)

HBA serves up hospitality again

The glow of the holidays will shine brightly next Saturday when Hillsboro Celebrates Christmas downtown with an array of traditional festivities. Santa Claus will be there, of course, and Mrs. Claus, too. Hank Geray and his horse-drawn wagon will be giving rides around town. (more…)
